Arnold Palmer served with the US Coast Guard for 3 years from 1951 to 1953. Initially he served as a physical fitness and self-defense instructor and then as a photographer within the Coast Guard.
His enlistment was motivated by the tragic death of his close friend, Bud Worsham, in a car accident, which deeply affected him during his time at Wake Forest College. Seeking a way to cope with his grief, Palmer decided to join the Coast Guard.
During his service, Palmer underwent basic training at Cape May, New Jersey, and later served at the Coast Guard station in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was involved with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. His military duties included training recruits and working as a photographer, capturing ID card photos.
After completing his service, Palmer returned to college to finish his education before embarking on his remarkable golf career.
