Clifford Roberts (co-founder of Augusta National) liked this name because the players were the “Masters of Golf”
The Masters was the brainchild of legendary amateur golfer Bobby Jones and investment dealer Clifford Roberts, who co-founded the Augusta National Golf Club in 1933.
When the tournament was first held, it was called the “Augusta National Invitation Tournament”. Bobby Jones preferred this name, but Roberts wanted to call it “The Masters” …. after several years, Roberts got his way, and it has been known as the Masters since 1939.
