The first Open Championship, in 1960, was won by Willie Park Sr. at Prestwick. The competition was not technically "open" as it was limited to professional golfers, primarily caddies who also played, and there was no prize money, only the Challenge Belt made of red Moroccan leather with silver panels .
In 1890 John Ball became the first non-Scotsman and the first amateur to win The Open Championship, marking a significant moment in the tournament's history .
