Why did players wear a yellow ribbon during the 2018 USPGA Championship?

Jarrod Lyle, former PGA Tour member from Australia, died aged 36 after a battle with cancer. Players showed their support through the wearing of a yellow ribbon on their caps.

More about the yellow ribbons during the 2018 USPGA Championship

  • Jarrod was first diagnosed with and fought leukemia while still a teenager and he still managed to follow his dream and become a professional golfer good enough to earn his card on the PGA tour.
  • He played on the tour for seven years.
  • Three of many touching moments from his peers:
    • Bryson DeChambeau won $25,000 for winning the Long Drive competition on the Wednesday. He donated to the fund “Jarrod Lyle’s girls”.
    • Rickie fowler had been scheduled to wear a blue shirt on the Thursday of the USPGA but switched to a yellow shirt in recognition of Jarrod. He shot a 5 under, 65. Well done Rickie!
    • Tiger Woods gets lots of ‘help’ requests – naturally he would. And so easiest for him to have a blanket rule of ‘No’. He broke that rule in 2012 when he wore a yellow Luek the Duck pin on his hat out of respect for Lyle. An in-depth article touches on Tiger’s kind act and looks in some detail at Jarrod’s life.
