It's generally accepted that the word golf comes from the Dutch word for club, ‘kolf’.
Trading was common between the Dutch and Scots through the 14th – 17th centuries and it’s thought that Dutch sailors may have brought ‘kolf’ clubs with them.
A game played on frozen canals in The Netherlands then was played on the coastal links lands of eastern Scotland.
