Sam played college golf at Louisiana State University.

During his time at LSU, he won four tournaments in 15 starts and was named the NCAA Division I Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year for the 2016-17 season. Burns also won three individual state championships in high school and was named the AJGA Rolex Junior Player of the Year in 2014

As an amateur he won the 2014 AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions, 2014 Junior PGA Championship, 2016 David Toms Intercollegiate, 2016 Sun Bowl Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic, 2017 Louisiana Classics and 2017 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.

In 2014 he was named AJGA Rolex Junior play.

Burns turned professional in 2017.

As of early 2025, Burns is ranked 22nd in the Official World Golf Ranking.

In the final round of the 2022 Valspar Championship, Sam Burns turned in a 2-under 69 to get to 17-under for the tournament, before defeating Davis Riley in a two-hole playoff to go back-to-back at Innisbrook Resort and claim his third win of his PGA TOUR career.

He won the 2021 Sanderson Farms Championship with a total score of 266 (-22). Runners up were Nick Watney and Cameron Young 1 shot behind.

He won the 2022 Valspar Championship with a total score of 267 (-17). He defeated Davis Riley in a playoff.
