Rory Daniel McIlroy was born on the 4th of May 1989 in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland.

McIlroy began playing golf at the age of two, coached by his father, Gerry McIlroy. He grew up playing at Holywood Golf Club, where he became a child prodigy.

Rory started playing golf at a very young age and was coached by his father (Gerry). He won the 9–10 year-old division in the World Championship at Doral in Florida.

When he was 16, Rory became the youngest player to ever win both the West of Ireland Championship and the Irish Close Championship. He was low amateur at the 2007 Open Championship.

As an amateur he won the 2005 West of Ireland Championship, 2025 Irish Amateur Close Championship, 2006 West of Ireland Championship, 2006 Irish Amateur Close Championship and 2006 European Amateur.

He signed a National Letter of Intent to play college golf at East Tennessee State University but decided to continue playing amateur golf in Europe until turning professional in 2007.

McIlroy turned professional in 2007 and has been chasing professional titles ever since.

He earned an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 2012 at the age of 22 for his services to sport.

In 2022, became the first player from outside the United States to serve on the PGA TOUR Policy Board.
