He went to East Tennessee State University where he played with the East Tennessee State Buccaneers men's golf team.
Michael won the Scottish Boys' Championship in 2008.
Michael won the 2010 Scottish Amateur. He also won the 2011 South African Amateur.
He turned pro in 2011.
Stewart began his professional career on the Challenge Tour, the second-tier tour in Europe.
He has also competed on the European Tour

Michael Stewart debuted at the 2023 Open Championship qualifying at Dundonald Links. He shot a -3 (68) to sit in a tie for seventh after the opening day. He ended up tied for 52nd.
