He is the son of a Church of England vicar (father) and math teacher (mother).

He was introduced to golf by his two older brothers.

Danny was an accomplished amateur, winning the 2007 English Amateur and he played in the 2007 Walker Cup.

As an amateur he won the 2007 Yorkshire Amateur, 2007 English Amateur, 2008 Australian Amateur Stroke Play Championship and 2008 Spanish International Amateur Championship.

He was the #1 ranked amateur golfer in the world before turning professional.

Before turning pro, Willett played college golf at Jackson State University in Alabama. He turned pro in 2008 and earned his European tour card in 2009 by advancing through qualifying school.
