The European Ryder Cup Team has won 14 times
Every two years, 24 of the best players from Europe and the United States go head-to-head in a match play competition.
The first Ryder Cup match was played in 1927 in the United States.
Originally The Ryder Cup was played between Great Britain and the United States.
From 1979 the repeated American dominance led to a decision to extend the representation of "Great Britain and Ireland" to include continental Europe.
This inclusion of golfers was partly prompted by the success of a new generation of Spanish golfers like Seve Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido.
Since then Team Europe has won eleven times outright and retained the Cup once in a tied match. In comparison, team America has nine wins over this period.
